Nurse Kim Eunbyeol at Hallym University Dongtan Sacred Heart Hospital

Dreams give goals, and goals grow me

Nurse Kim Eunbyeol’s story was told in the 85th issue of ‘Dongposarang (loving compatriots)’. We were curious to find out to how she was doing, as someone who is always up for a challenge as she dreams of a new world, so we visited her at Hallym University Dongtan Sacred Heart Hospital. She was waiting for her shift to start so she greeted us in her pink nurse uniform. Never losing her smile, she shared the life she’d walked until now and her new dreams.

Nurse Kim Eunbyeol shared that she lived a goal-oriented life for the past 10 years of her settlement in Korea. Diving in headfirst into a foreign country to start a new life in her 20s, she spent her time chasing her new dreams, setting goals to achieve them, and investing time to accomplish those goals.

A goal-oriented life is the source of motivation

She chose to live a bold life in South Korea and chose a career path that ensured her future.

Nurse Kim acquired a nurse’s aide certificate after graduating from Hanawon. Afterwards, aiming for higher goals, she studied hard even in difficult conditions and got accepted into Wonkwang Health Science University, got a nursing certificate, and got a stable job. She even got an apartment under her name.

“I was in my early 20s when I first came to Korea. Since I was young, I wanted to play and enjoy my youth like my friends. But I didn’t want to waste the freedom that I had gotten with such difficulty. Youth is short, but my life will be long. At the end of my days, I wanted to be able to say that I lived a diligent life,” shared Nurse Kim, recalling her past days.

“When you have a dream, you get a goal, and you get the desire to achieve that goal. I agreed to this interview because I think that my story will give courage and strength to North Korean refugees to have a dream. I believe that anyone can achieve wonderful things when they have a dream and start toward achieving it. In this society, you are the one who defines your position. If you think something is difficult, then everything will be difficult. But if you believe, then the road to the future will show itself,” she said, exuding an extraordinary passion for life.

A new dream: directing a nursing home

Initially, because it had been so challenging to earn her nursing certificate, she found a job in a general hospital in order to work at a place less demanding. But after working for about a year and eight months, her health sent such serious warning signs that she had to rest for 3 months. The workplace she found after that is the hospital she’s currently working at. It’s already been 7 years since she started working as a nurse in a foreign place alone. She never despairs or settles, no matter what difficulties come her way.

Going into her mid-30s now, Nurse Kim is steadily preparing for her new dream. She said that after gaining clinical experience from the hospital she’s currently working at, she wants to start a nursing home in her name. There are many roads in life and many different paths one can take. Hitting her 10th year mark of settlement in South Korea, we earnestly hope for Nurse Kim’s precious dream to come true.
